Local context

BACKGROUND: UHRFF was founded in response to the growing need for safe, accessible, and inclusive cultural spaces that affirm the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people, refugees, youth, creatives, and other marginalized communities often excluded from national cultural discourse. It offers a space for storytelling that challenges oppression, builds empathy, and activates change. In a region marked by ongoing displacement, shrinking civic space, and structural inequalities, UHRFF emerges as both a creative celebration and a political intervention, grounded in Uganda’s spirit of hospitality and resistance

Description

Project Overview: The Uganda Human Rights Film Festival (UHRFF) is a 14-day multi-venue cultural programme that harnesses the power of film, storytelling, and creative expression to elevate urgent human rights issues in Uganda and East Africa. Spearheaded by Kakyoproject, Uganda’s first queer-led creative hub, UHRFF provides an inclusive, trauma-informed platform for cross-border solidarity, community healing, and cultural diplomacy through independent African and global cinema. Founded on Uganda’s rich culture of hospitality and creative resistance, UHRFF brings together local and regional audiences, including Ugandans, refugees from Somalia, Sudan, Congo, Ethiopia, and neighbouring countries, to engage with powerful independent films, conversations, performances, and healing practices.
