Local context

Music plays a fundamental role in African society, accompanying every stage of life. It is present at weddings, baptisms, funerals, circumcision ceremonies, and even traditional wrestling matches, expressing the emotions, stories, and values of an entire community. Songs, percussion, melodies, and rhythms shape the key moments of life, giving music a role in fostering social bonds and transmitting culture. Yet, despite this immeasurable richness, music struggles to find its rightful place in African films. Too often relegated to a secondary or purely ornamental role, it is incorporated only late in the filmmaking process and fails to reflect the continent’s vibrant cultural spirit.

Description

Kim’Art Sound is an artistic and educational residency dedicated to training and supporting African composers in the field of film music. The goal is to create a space where musicians, composers, sound effects artists, sound designers, and filmmakers can meet, learn, experiment, and collaborate to develop a new generation of specialized composers. The residency offers training workshops, masterclasses, creative sessions, and professional networking opportunities that enable participants to acquire essential technical and artistic skills: composing for film, orchestration, using music production software, understanding cinematic language, and collaborating with directors.
