It is the national centre for ASSITEJ (the International Association of Theatre and Performing Arts for Children and Young People), which works in around 100 countries across the world and was founded in 1965 in Paris. ASSITEJ SA builds the sector of theatre and performing arts for young audiences in SA through supporting and developing the network of artists, empowering education through the performing arts, creating strategies for access to the arts, and advocating for the role of the arts as an essential right of every child and young person.
Through initiatives like Theatre4Youth, we take theatre to schools and bring schools to theatre, ensuring access for children of all backgrounds and abilities. We champion access for marginalised groups, from very young children to those living with disabilities, and curate platforms like the Cradle of Creativity festival, where new voices and stories can emerge.  We nurture artists through mentorship, play development, and international collaborations, raising the standard of theatre for young audiences. Our education programmes inspire teachers, enrich schools, and support wellbeing through creative expression, embedding the arts at the heart of learning. ASSITEJ SA connects South Africa to the world, amplifying African leadership  on international stages. In every way, we help children and artists imagine, create, and grow together through the arts.


ASSITEJ South Africa connects and supports theatre practitioners, companies, organisations, institutions and schools across the country, who share a belief in the transformative difference that theatre and the performing arts make in the lives of children and young people, inspiring imaginations, shifting perceptions, teaching empathy and building our nation.
