Moïse Touré maintains a deep, filial connection with Africa. Although he has lived in France since early childhood, directed major contemporary authors (Duras, Koltès, Sartre, Le Clézio…), and served as an associate artist at national theatres (Guadeloupe, Annecy…), he has never abandoned his fathers’ culture, carrying it across languages and countries: in Bambara, Creole, Berber, Japanese, Vietnamese, Portuguese…
In 2003, he responded to a forecast by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) administrator: “Poverty in Africa will be halved by 2147.” This led to two shows on the theme, with a third now in preparation. Today, he once again turns to the fate of the continent, seeking to explore Africa’s current transformations in light of international tensions, youth awakenings, and global political movements. Over the years, Africa has gradually influenced Western thought. He says, “we become Africans without knowing it,” as the continent increasingly shapes universal issues in the early 21st century: ecological transition, gender questions, and youth, which is transforming the world and becoming the main actor of its own change.
As a director, Moïse Touré believes that theatre has a role to play in these decades of rapid acceleration, on the condition that it does not get swept away, but rather develops projects that take time, build over the long term, and involve increasingly engaged communities.
