Details
As part of the Africa Creative Sounds – Création Africa programme, led by the Institut français to support the structuring and international visibility of African music industries, we are launching an open call for a Sound Design Training in Nairobi, Kenya. It will be delivered by Gobelins, in partnership with the Alliance Française de Nairobi.
Africa Creative Sounds is dedicated to supporting emerging talents and music industry professionals across the African continent, by fostering networking, mobility, and access to meaningful professional opportunities.
Are you an African composer, beatmaker or musician looking to build your skills in sound design? Gobelins × Africa Creative Sounds training!
An eight-day programme, from narrative to final mix
The training covers the full chain of audio post-production for the moving image. It opens with the fundamentals of cinematic sound narrative — the relationship between sound and image, dramaturgical functions of sound, film language, and the role of the sound designer within a post-production team — before moving progressively into hands-on practice. Participants work through concrete, graduated exercises: creating a sound logo (day 2), an in-depth exploration of sound synthesis in its various forms — subtractive, FM, granular, sampling (day 3) — followed by sound design for a dialogue-free film scene (day 4), sound creation for an advertisement or trailer (day 5), mixing principles and cinema and broadcast delivery standards (day 6), and a final two-day workshop dedicated to the complete post-production of an extended sequence, from track import to final mix export.
Each day alternates between theoretical input, guided listening and individual practice, with collective screenings of participants' work and peer feedback sessions throughout.
The training is led by Dominique Legitimus, Apple Logic Pro Master Trainer, music producer and audio education consultant, and a LinkedIn Learning instructor. Drawing on extensive professional experience across the sound industry, he regularly delivers training at Gobelins and across Africa and the Caribbean. His active, experiential teaching method is built around the concrete needs of participants: ahead of the training, a preparatory exchange and individual questionnaire allow the programme to be tailored to the professional realities of the group.
