International Competition 2026 architecture and innovation – Jacques Rougerie Foundation – Académie des beaux-arts
Sectors :
Architecture
This competition invites participants to design new living environments across three realms where physical and environmental conditions redefine the act of building: flood-prone lands, marine and submarine environments, and space.
In these unstable or hostile contexts, the ground can no longer be taken for granted, the atmosphere is no longer assured, resources are limited, and natural cycles impose their own temporalities. The challenge is not to dominate the environment, but to
design in harmony with it.
• On flood-prone lands, rising sea levels make water a central design parameter: adaptability, reversibility, scalability, and integrated risk management become essential.
• In marine and submarine environments, swell, currents, pressure, and buoyancy (Archimedes’ principle) call for a systemic approach that combines architecture, engineering, and ecology as the driving force of design.
• In space, vacuum, radiation, and microgravity transform architecture into a life-support system: autonomy, closed-loop cycles, modularity, and maintainability structure the proposal.
Projects are encouraged to develop bold, resilient, and tangible responses.
The objective is to place humanity and living systems at the heart of safe and desirable frameworks, capable of turning constraints into resources and inventing new ways of inhabiting the Earth, the sea, and beyond—by bringing together art, science, and technology in close connection with nature.

Details
The Foundation’s awards aim to offer architects, designers, engineers, urban planners, inventors, artists, and professionals from all disciplines a unique opportunity to propose bold projects. They recognize multidisciplinary, biomimetic architectural projects across three themes: “Flood-Prone Lands,” “Sea,” and “Space,” each comprising two categories: Prospective Project and LAB Project.
These architectural projects, grounded in emerging advances and driven by either a forward-looking or practical vision, must address the major challenges facing humanity today in pursuit of greater environmental, industrial, and technical responsibility. They must adhere to the principles of sustainable development and contribute to integrating the sea, space, and rising sea levels into the development of our society.
In 2026, the Fondation Jacques Rougerie – Académie des beaux-arts will reward candidates presenting an architectural project related to flood-prone lands, the sea, or space, by awarding prizes totaling €42,000 (forty-two thousand euros). Participants may compete either individually or as a team, with the designation of a project lead referred to as the “Leader.”
Prizes will be awarded to the individual candidate or to the Leader of a team (who will be responsible for distributing the prize among team members).
The amounts of the Grand Architecture and Innovation Prizes are distributed as follows:
• Grand Prize – Flood-Prone Lands – Prospective: €7,000 (seven thousand euros)
• Grand Prize – Flood-Prone Lands – LAB: €7,000 (seven thousand euros)
• Grand Prize – Sea – Prospective: €7,000 (seven thousand euros)
• Grand Prize – Sea – LAB: €7,000 (seven thousand euros)
• Grand Prize – Space – Prospective: €7,000 (seven thousand euros)
• Grand Prize – Space – LAB: €7,000 (seven thousand euros)
In addition to financial support, the Laureates will benefit from the Foundation’s guidance to further develop their project and potentially bring it to fruition. They may draw upon the Foundation’s network of experts.
Furthermore, this year, thanks to the joint support of the Jacques Rougerie Foundation, Nhood, Ceetrus, and the Projex Group, participants will have the unique opportunity to develop and realize their project around the theme:
“Building and Living with Water in the Dunkirk Territory, France.”
The competition is free of charge and open to both students and professionals from around the world. Prizes will be awarded—without any condition related to age, gender, nationality, or religion—to a team or to an individually designated author.
