Details

École des Sables will host the Biennale de la Danse en Afrique 2026, a major event on the continental artistic calendar, initiated by the Institut Français de Paris. In collaboration with Kaay Fecc and Zhu Culture, this edition, to be held mainly in Toubab Dialaw, with activities in Dakar, will bring together artists, choreographers, researchers and industry professionals to celebrate the creativity and vitality of the African choreographic scene. The Biennale de la Danse en Afrique au Sénégal will run from April 29 to May 3, 2026, in Toubab Dialaw and Dakar. It is open to African choreographers living on the African continent and from the African Diaspora, working in the field of contemporary choreographic creation. Among the themes to be addressed are the environment, the voice of African women in choreography, and gender equality. Candidate companies will be selected by the artistic director on the basis of the following criteria: quality, originality and innovation. Applications from women and from the emerging generation are encouraged. Particular attention will be paid to projects that are in situ or can be adapted to different natural or non-theatrical contexts.

Goals

  • A must-see event for contemporary African dance

For five days, the Biennale will transform the École des Sables and its surroundings into a dynamic crossroads of artistic exchange, offering an immersive experience between beach, nature and urban scenes: - Unique shows and vibrant performances - Training courses and masterclasses with leading dance figures - Round tables and conferences on the challenges of choreographic creation in Africa - Shows for young audiences, workshops and school events to introduce the younger generation to dance - Film screenings and showcasing of African choreographic archives - A Biennial Village, an interactive space bringing together artists, artisans, partners and festival-goers

  • A Biennial at the heart of a creative and committed ecosystem

Hosting the Biennial in Senegal, the birthplace of great dance figures such as Germaine Acogny, is part of the dynamic of a country renowned for its choreographic heritage and its role as an artistic and cultural hub. In keeping with the values of eco-responsibility, the Biennial will feature open-air stages in nature and on the beach at Toubab Dialaw.

  • International reach and unique influence

The Biennial is supported by solid partnerships with major cultural institutions, including the French Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, the French Institute in Paris, the French Embassy in Senegal, the French Institutes in Senegal, as well as arts organizations and economic players committed to promoting arts and culture in Africa.
