What is the aim of the call?
Espaces de culture is a new program focusing specifically on sub-Saharan Africa and modelled on the European Espaces de culture program. It focuses on collaboration, dialogue and mutual learning between European and local partners in sub-Saharan Africa.
Spaces of Culture is launched as part of the European Commission's wider Africa-Europe Partnerships for Culture program, which aims to encourage cooperation between artists, creators and cultural professionals from Africa and Europe. The aim of this call is to support cultural relations projects in sub-Saharan African countries, based on equal partnerships and local ownership, involving cultural and civil society players, EUNIC members and EU delegations.
Selected projects should demonstrate innovation and relevance to the local context, and illustrate both equal partnerships and the development of the “Team Europe” approach in sub-Saharan Africa.
What are we looking for?
Projects should embody the principles of cultural relations and go beyond the promotion of European culture in sub-Saharan Africa.Project activities should demonstrate a deeper understanding of these principles by practicing mutual listening and learning, engaging in dialogue, co-creation and joint capacity building with all members and partners involved.
The call encourages contemporary and innovative formats, linked to the arts, creative industries, digitization, education, gender, heritage, human rights, social inclusion, sports, sustainability, tourism, youth, etc.Where appropriate, projects will promote spaces for free speech and artistic expression, particularly in fragile contexts.
Projects must contribute to achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals.
Care should be taken to widen access to culture and cultural collaborations, particularly among young people, people with disabilities, communities living outside urban areas and communities living in fragile contexts, notably in terms of the environment and security.
